Morning Yoga
Daily sessions in the open-air forest pavilion. Hatha and Yin styles on alternate days. Suitable for all levels, including complete beginners.
A small Ayurvedic retreat in the rainforests of Sri Lanka's hill country.
Seven bungalows. Fourteen guests. Ancient wisdom. Unhurried time.
We built Karunā House because we kept meeting people who were exhausted in a way
that sleep couldn't fix. People who had been productive and successful and perfectly
fine, and yet couldn't quite remember the last time they had felt at ease in their
own body. Modern life has become extraordinarily skilled at filling every moment —
and in doing so, it has quietly stolen the space in which we actually recover.
Karunā House was designed as a counter to that. Small. Slow. Rooted in an ancient
system of medicine — Ayurveda — that understood over 3,000 years ago that genuine
health is not the absence of illness, but the presence of balance. We work with a
resident Ayurvedic physician who has practiced for over 20 years. Our yoga teachers
are not retreat-circuit teachers — they have each studied for a decade or more. Our
food is grown on the land or sourced from within 10km. Nothing here is designed to
impress you. Everything here is designed to restore you.
Founded in 2015 by Nirmala Jayawardena — a Sri Lankan architect who returned home after 12 years in London with the specific intention of building one small, beautiful, purposeful thing. She found the land — six hectares of overgrown tea estate — and spent 18 months restoring it before the first bungalow was built.
Every day at Karunā House follows a gentle rhythm — early enough to catch the mist on the forest, unhurried enough to let the afternoon dissolve. The programme is a suggestion, never a schedule. You are always free to simply sit.
Daily sessions in the open-air forest pavilion. Hatha and Yin styles on alternate days. Suitable for all levels, including complete beginners.
A guided, largely silent walk through the 6-hectare estate and into the adjacent rainforest reserve. No phones. No conversation. The forest does something that we cannot.
A private one-on-one consultation with Dr. Pradeep Wickramasinghe. He will assess your Prakriti (constitution), discuss your wellness intentions, and shape your personal programme for the stay.
A weekly group sound bath using Tibetan singing bowls and a Sri Lankan rabana drum. Held at the outdoor fire circle as the forest falls quiet.
A structured 5 or 7-day Ayurvedic detox and rejuvenation protocol, supervised by Dr. Pradeep. Includes specific diet, daily treatments, herbal preparations, and rest protocols.
A small-group session with our head chef, Samanthi, in which guests harvest produce from the garden and learn to cook one traditional Ayurvedic dish from scratch.
A guided walk through the neighbouring tea estates with a local tea maker, ending with a cupping session of single-estate teas from the surrounding hills.
Evening sessions guided by Malini, covering mindfulness meditation, breath awareness, and pranayama (yogic breathing). A gentle close to the day.
"The most common feedback we receive is that this, more than any treatment or class, is the moment guests begin to release. The forest does something that we cannot."

All treatments at Karunā House are rooted in traditional Sri Lankan and South Indian Ayurvedic practice. We do not offer Swedish massage or express facials. What we offer is slower, older, and more considered — treatments designed not for relaxation alone, but for genuine constitutional restoration.
The foundational Ayurvedic treatment
Warm herbal oils, selected for your constitution, are applied in long flowing strokes to nourish the tissues and calm the nervous system.
Deep nourishment for tired muscles
Hot linen boluses filled with rice cooked in milk and herbal decoctions are used to massage the entire body. Deeply nourishing for tired muscles and dry skin.
For anxiety, insomnia, and mental fatigue
A continuous thin stream of warm herbal oil is poured gently over the forehead (the "third eye" point). Profoundly calming. Includes Abhyanga opening.
For respiratory, sinus & mental clarity
A specialized protocol involving facial steam, gentle sinus massage, and medicated nasal drops. Specialist protocol — assessed at intake.
From our own garden — no synthetics
A traditional facial using fresh turmeric, neem, and sandalwood pastes prepared daily from the on-site garden. No synthetic ingredients. No compromise.
For lower back pain & sacral tension
A dough ring placed on the lower back is filled with warm medicated oil, held in position. Specific to lower back pain, sacral tension, and sciatica.
Ayurvedic constitution analysis & prescription
A dedicated consultation covering Prakriti analysis, lifestyle recommendations, and herbal prescription where appropriate. The beginning of understanding your constitution.
3 Hours · Limited to 2 guests per day · Book 72 hours in advance
Our most complete treatment. A three-hour journey beginning with a Pranayama breath session, followed by full Abhyanga, Shirodhara, and ending with a guided body scan meditation. Not available every day — we limit this experience to ensure the full attention and care of our most experienced therapist.
"Three hours. One guest at a time. This is the treatment that people fly back for."
We welcome a maximum of 14 guests at any time. This is intentional. Every stay is confirmed personally by Nirmala or a senior member of the team — this is not an automated booking system, and we don't apologise for that. We ask a few questions before confirming your place, because we want to be sure that what we offer is right for what you need.
Forest Bungalow
Single-level timber and stone bungalow within the forest. Private outdoor shower. Day bed on the veranda. King bed. 1–2 guests.
Garden Bungalow
Facing the organic garden with a small private garden terrace. Slightly larger, King or twin configuration. 1–2 guests.
Suite
Our elevated suite at the highest point of the estate. Private terrace with outdoor soaking tub and forest views. Includes one Abhyanga per guest.
The estate sits on the edge of Knuckles Mountain Forest Reserve — a UNESCO World
Heritage Site of tropical montane forest, home to over 180 species of birds,
34 species of amphibians, and some of Sri Lanka's rarest endemic plants.
At 900m elevation, the temperature rarely exceeds 28°C, and the mornings and
evenings carry the coolness of the cloud belt. Mist moves through the property
most mornings, burning off by 9 AM to reveal views across the Kandy Valley.
We are in the tropics but feel nothing like a tropical resort — the hill country
has its own pace and temperature and light. We are not decorating this landscape.
We are guests within it.
All meals at Karunā House are prepared according to Ayurvedic principles — seasonal, local, plant-forward, and tailored to the dominant energy of the group. We serve three meals a day plus herbal teas and light snacks. Nothing is processed. Nothing comes from further than 50km.
Fresh fruit, freshly made string hoppers, coconut sambol, and a hot herbal drink prepared by our kitchen each morning.
A rotating thali of rice, dhal, 4–5 seasonal vegetable preparations, and a fresh salad from the garden. The heart of the day.
Soups, broths, steamed grains, and herbal preparations. Light enough for the body to rest and restore through the night.
